Remember the scene where Carrie Bradshaw is browsing in the Prada store in SATC 2 and accosted by the sales girl screaming "Carrie we haven't seen you in ageees!" to which she replies with a whisper " I have been cheating on fashion with furniture".
Well that's exactly what's happened to me. Ok, not e-xac-tly. It didn't happen at Prada but Primark, and no sales girl ran to hug me to tell me she missed me I just missed shopping. But you get my vibe. After 27 years of obsessiong over everything related to fashion, for the first time in my life I have discovered another world, the wonderful world of interior design. And I can tell you it's almost as exciting as fashion!
Forget bib necklaces, silk skirts and embellished sandals. I have spent the past few months totally immersed in paint farrow & ball samples, searching Living Etc and House & Garden for yellow customised bed headboards, and been scouring endless designer websites to find the perfect console. I was lucky to meet (and fall in friendship love) with designer extraordinaire Sarah Baily who has used our new house as a blank canvas for her decorating ideas. Below is the quircky floor lamp she made for us. It's an old pub lamp she sprayed in bright pink and to which she added a metal lamp shade structure. She's also made a sketche of what our bedroom will look like when finished.
We've started with the hallway and our bedroom which are actually the rooms we see the most often in the house and so far the excitement is still peaking. It takes longer to decorate a room thatn it takes to the perfect outfit but the reward is worth it.
Still very much a work in progress but it's actually a great feeling to take time to choose each object, piece of furniture, colour and lighting over a few months rather than rush into buying everything right here right now and end up with a room featured in last year's IKEA catalogue.
